Greenville Police Officer Cooper Dawson Killed in Line of Duty

A tragic incident occurred on Monday night in Greenville, resulting in the death of Police Officer Cooper Dawson. According to the Greenville Police Department, Officer Dawson was shot and killed while chasing a suspect.

The incident began when Officer Dawson stopped a vehicle just before 8 p.m. in the 3500 block of Picket Street. The suspect fled on foot, and Officer Dawson pursued. While in a wooded area behind homes, the suspect ambushed Officer Dawson, shooting him multiple times.

Despite his critical injuries, Officer Dawson showed exceptional courage, returning fire and striking the suspect. Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith expressed his department’s heartbreak over the loss, praising Officer Dawson’s selfless service to the community.

Officer Dawson was a highly respected member of the Greenville Police Department, having previously worked for the Garland Police Department. His death marks the first line-of-duty death in Greenville in over 100 years.

The suspect’s name and condition have not been released. The Greenville Police Department has asked for thoughts and prayers for Officer Dawson’s family, the department, and the Greenville community during this difficult time.
