Fatal Crash in North Vernon Claims Life of 44-Year-Old Anthony Lucas

A devastating car accident occurred near Brush Creek Elementary in North Vernon on Monday evening, resulting in the tragic death of 44-year-old Anthony Lucas. According to the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department, the accident took place shortly after 9 p.m..

Upon arrival, deputies found that a 2014 Hyundai passenger vehicle, driven by Lucas, had collided with a 2011 Toyota Tundra. Investigators suspect that the driver of the Tundra, 41-year-old James Pittman, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The collision resulted in Lucas suffering fatal injuries. Pittman has been arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing death, classified as a Level 4 felony.

The sheriff’s department reported that US 50 East was closed for nearly five hours to facilitate the cleanup and investigation of the crash. Chief Deputy Cody Low emphasized the importance of responsible driving, stating, “This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences associated with impaired driving and the importance of wearing seatbelts”.
